Luanda International School was founded in 1996 and has been developing rapidly.

LIS was authorized in 1999 to offer the International Baccalaureate Organization's Primary Years Programme.

In 2001 a group of companies hired an experienced international administrator to assist them in building a new campus and expanding and improving the school. At that time the country was just reaching the end of its thirty-year civil war and employers were just beginning to hire expatriates with families.

In September 2003, LIS located in a new, purpose built campus in Luanda Sul, about 20 kilometers south of the city of Luanda. Today we have a beautiful new campus, and a preschool for four years olds through high school offering the three IB programs to over 300 students of 35 nationalities.

LIS was accredited by ECIS and NEASC in May 2004 after having been in operation on the new campus for only eight months. At the same time LIS underwent a highly successful PYP evaluation visit. The school was granted candidate status for the IB Middle Years programme within a few months of adding years 10 and11, and was authorized in May ’06. Remarkably, LIS was granted authorization status for the IB Diploma program in September 2005 less than a month after having added year 12.

LIS graduated the 1st senior class in May 2007.
